Tell Me Your Excuses…

Hello Friends !

Congratulations! It’s the last work day in January and Super Bowl is only a couple of days away! A little hard to believe that we haven’t talked since last year, but I believe that is the case… where did that time go?  YIKES!

So we’re now 30 days into the new year and I am wondering how you are doing and have some questions for you…  Did you take some time to reflect on 2014 (see the image below for a place to start) and do you know where you’re headed in 2015?  Are you a resolutions person or do you set a ‘theme’ for the new year?  Do you pick a word that you focus on? Mine is ‘Flywheel’ and you can ask if you’re interested or share yours with me!  And if you’re not a resolution person, what is your goal(s) for 2015?  You have them written down, right? Are you wanting to get in better shape or eat better? Travel more? Be smarter with your money? If so, then be sure to check out the resources below as I think there will be one in there to help.

However, if you are like some Americans, whatever resolutions/goals you may have had on January 1st are quickly fading or already long gone.  And while you might be looking for some TLC, this newsletter is about TLT – Tough Love Talk.  SO SUCK IT UP BUTTERCUP!

Was that too much?  I know, I know… we all have our reasons for letting things slide and not getting to where we want to go. I’d love to hold your hand and tell you that’s it’s all going to be OK (which it can be) but what might be more useful is for someone to give you a kick to keep you moving and hold you accountable to yourself and your word. YOU HAVE THINGS TO DO!  Experiences and love to share with your family, creativity, drive and leadership with your co-workers, compassion and connection in your community and with the world and if you don’t get out of your own way, how is that going to happen?  When is that going to happen?  NOW!!!  It happens NOW!!!

Below are a few of my favorite pieces of motivation when I’m starting to fall down or have fallen down and need to get back up.  Because it’s not that you won’t fall down along the way, it’s what you do when it happens that makes all the difference.

Music First – Michael Jackson – Man In The Mirror (Joyful Noise Version) – Because all of this starts and ends with YOU.  While it takes people around you to support you and help, the drive has to come from YOU!  Only you will know if you are doing your best.  And that is all that can be asked.  At the beginning and end of every day, you need to look at the person in the mirror and answer for your best.  This is one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE SONGS to remind me of that!  And I love the line – “I don’t want to hear you, I want to hear God through you.”  Whatever you call it, ‘Universe’, ‘Spirit’ or ‘The Force’, let that be your inner voice this year.

Doing The Impossible – Kyle Maynard – Pick something big and go get it.  Piece by piece, day by day and when you don’t feel like you can and that the mountain is too big to climb, come back to this and then try to tell me ‘you can’t’.  I have had this video sent to me several times and watched it on my own countless times.  When I feel things are getting hard, too big or too challenging, this has helped me put things into perspective

Let’s Have a Talk and Get Physical – Darren Hardy, Publisher of Success Magazine and Darren Daily is my new favorite resource that I read/listen to every day.  Here is a little TLT from him.  I have heard over and over that if you don’t have your health, YOU DON’T HAVE ANYTHING and I whole heartedly believe this and is a big reason I decided to take on the challenge of an Ironman.  Tony Robbins makes the point that if you want to be your best self for your family and your community then you need to get your ass in shape!  In addition, I highly recommend getting his daily emails and his 10-Day Series on Conquering Your Dreams is AWESOME!

Something Personal – While stories, books and videos of inspiring people and achievements are fantastic, sometimes it takes something very personal to remember and hold on to when difficulty arises or to remember why you have set the goals for yourself in the first place.  Do you find motivation for action in your children?  Your work?  A loved one lost?  For me, it is the recent passing of one of my best friends, Zorro.  At 15+ years young, Zorro’s kidneys finally gave up the fight and we put him down on December 27th, 2014.  It was an incredibly difficult end to 2014 but one filled with magic and inspiration and a lifetime of memories in what he brought, left and inspired in his community.  Here is more on the Legacy Of Zorro from mom’s perspective (Joan Jakel) and things that he inspired in both of us as his parents.  Where can you draw strength from personal experience to push yourself further?

“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.”

― Oscar Wilde

And stepping off the TLT Box in 3 – 2 – 1… done.  Please know that no matter what you are working on and where you want to go, I am here to help – whether that be some TLC or TLT, advice, a resource or introduction to a connection or to just vent – please let me know how I can support you in your journey.  I can’t wait to hear about what you accomplish in 2015!

Jack

PS – Next month’s newsletter is all about business!  So, if you have a business that you would like featured next month in the resources section, let me know!

PPS – No matter what team you are cheering for, have a fantastic Super Bowl Weekend!

MONEYIf you haven’t heard the interview that Tim Ferriss did with Tony Robbins on his new book, I think you are missing one of the best interviews of 2014.  And I don’t think it makes a difference if you are a Tony Robbins fan or not.  And for a little extra, but sure to watch Inside Job which inspired the book.
NOT TO DOAnd no matter what you do this year, please take care of these 6 things… FOR BUSINESS SAKES MAN! 🙂
TRAVELLooking to go somewhere amazing in 2015?  Trover is my favorite new travel photo site.  And once you pick your place, here are some tips to find the very best airfare.
JACK’S ATTITUDEWe all know that no matter how hard we try, we won’t win them all.  In those moments, it’s my opinion that it’s how you played that will always count and be remembered. Thanks to Debbie Whitlock for reminding me of this.
ACCOUNTABILITYWant to stop making excuses?  Step one is owning your mistakes and learning from them. As a Packers fan, the NFC Championship Game concluded with a painful ending but not nearly as painful for me as it was for Brandon Bostick.  If you want to know how to handle failure, this is an amazing example.
FITNESS

For counting calories and fitness, MyFitnessPal has to be one of the best that I have found.
